Principal's Message

A school with a long and illustrious history, St Stephen’s College Preparatory School has always been a pioneer in adapting to the needs of our ever-changing world. Over the years we have been proactively integrating traditional teaching methods with innovative, modern education techniques. We have managed to infuse internationalism into the local education setting so that the prerequisites of present day education are met while preserving a sense of continuity rooted in tradition.

Foreseeing the demand of multilingualism in education, the School adopted a trilingual policy almost two decades ago. This has helped our students to keep up with global language demands and become fluent in English, Putonghua and Cantonese. A team of professionally qualified and dedicated local and international teachers helps us to achieve this vision by creating an engaging, language-rich environment conducive to successful multilingual learning.

STEM is integrated through inquiry-based learning and these philosophies form an integral part of our teaching methodology. The School believes in nurturing critical and creative thinkers who can apply innovative solutions to problems by encouraging and exposing our students to various mentally invigorating learning experiences. This is further enhanced and supported by a tailor-made curriculum, which introduces students to a variety of academic perspectives and disciplines. Our teaching faculty incorporates the latest technology in their lessons to create a progressive, student-centred learning environment. Overseas education tours and theme-based excursions provide students with opportunities to experience learning outside the classroom and to safely explore the world beyond.

Our campus is located on St Stephen’s Beach and steeped in heritage and natural scenery. Historic buildings and state-of-the-art facilities are seamlessly integrated and provide our students with a stimulating environment in which to learn and grow. Our carefully curated library, contemporary auditorium, bespoke greenhouse and various other outstanding facilities contribute to a multi-faceted learning experience for our students. These amenities ensure that our students are not only dedicated to academics but that they are also given the opportunity to actively participate and excel in extra-curricular activities and interschool competitions.

Our school has strong traditions in both music and sport. All our students are required to play at least one music instrument as we believe that music plays a vital role in their all round development. Besides helping our students to develop greater coordination, focus and concentration, music also provides them witha an outlet for their creativity and enhances their aesthetic and cognitive development. Our students are also encouraged to take part in a variety of individual and team sports to ensure the overall development of mind and body. The School has excellent sporting facilities and our students benefit greatly from increased physical fitness, dedicated practice and teamwork.

Our one-year compulsory boarding programme for Grade Six students is a unique platform which helps students to develop greater self-discipline and become more independent and responsible. The programme focuses on building character and camaraderie through participation in interactive projects and structured group activities. Students are also given the opportunity to acquire important life skills, and through our community service activities, we aim to instill a commitment to active citizenship. Ultimately, we hope to shape the young minds of today and cultivate principled and caring future leaders of tomorrow.

Mr Gordon Wong
Acting Principal

History

St Stephen’s College, Hong Kong’s first EMI boarding school was established in 1903. In later years, the College Council decided to establish a preparatory school as a feeder school to the College to complement the programme.

St Stephen’s College Preparatory School formally entered the Hong Kong education force in the year 1938. Situated in Stanley peninsula, Hong Kong’s most scenic area in the Southern District, the School started as one block which housed classrooms, a dormitory and a dining hall. The total enrolment then was nine.

As World War II broke out, St Stephen’s was forced to close its doors. During that time, the campus was occupied by Japanese armies and used as their concentration camp. The School’s proximity to the shoreline facilitated the loading and unloading of boats, and therefore it was later enlisted as the General Commanding Post of the Taiwanese troop and thus survived the war.

After the war, the School reopened in 1947 with two blocks, which comprised of a block of classrooms and another housed the hall.

The School further expanded in the fifties and a new boys’ dormitory was added. In the sixties, the School opened its boarding facilities to girls. At that time the student population was about three hundred, and the class number went up to nine.

During the riots of 1967, enrolment numbers dropped drastically due to students emigrating with their families. In the early seventies, there was a surge in enrolment. The School had to expand to accommodate the growing numbers. Each grade was split into two classes. By 1983, the number of classes reached twelve.

In the year 2000, the School launched a new upgraded curriculum, which was focused on two languages and three dialects. The reform was supported by parents and demand for places started to rise, which prompted the addition of more classes in September of the same year. By 2005 the number of classes had reached 18.

In 2008, the block that housed the hall was demolished and a new block with upgraded facilities took its place. In 2016, the School expanded its infrastructure yet again. A new block housing state-of-the-art amenities, such as an ultramodern auditorium, an expansive library, a bespoke greenhouse, and an additional staffroom was constructed. By 2021 the number of classes will be reached 24.

School Song

St Stephen’s College Song
“Our Hearts are Young our Ideals High”

Music by P.H. Fricker

Lyrics by P. Carrott

Our hearts are young our ideals high

We are prepared to work and play

To live good lives and to be true

In everything we do or say

So for St Stephen's let us strive

To fight, to win with steadfast pride

Life's a game that's made to play

With effort, teamwork, joy and tears

Based on tradition laid before

And wisdom growing with the years

So for St Stephen's let us strive

To fight, to win with steadfast pride
